Rain's Story

From an early age, Rain's life was shaped by significant adversity.

Diagnosed with Selective Mutism and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder as a child, she often found everyday interactions challenging. Experiences of bullying, social isolation and feeling overlooked at school gradually eroded her confidence and sense of belonging.

Despite these challenges, Rain found strength in creativity. A talented musician, singer and writer, she performed throughout her childhood and completed her first book at just 11 years old. Yet behind these achievements, she was carrying the weight of trauma, neglect and physical abuse.

As she grew older, Rain experienced significant mental health challenges, including anger, self-harm and periods of suicidal ideation. Multiple experiences of abuse and assault left her with permanent injuries, including damage to her singing voice, a loss that profoundly impacted her sense of identity.

Yet even during her darkest moments, Rain refused to give up. Determined to create a different future, she committed herself to understanding her trauma, rebuilding her wellbeing and pursuing her education. She graduated high school with strong results and a growing belief that life could be different.

It was during this period that Rain discovered Youth Insearch.

Arriving at her first workshop, she felt anxious and uncertain about what to expect. A simple conversation on the bus with another participant became the beginning of a friendship that continues today and an early reminder that she was not alone.

When Rain entered the workshop circle for the first time, something shifted.

For the first time in a long time, she felt accepted. Through the peer-led environment, she connected with other young people who understood struggle and resilience. Listening to others' stories helped her recognise that she did not have to face her challenges by herself.

As she continued attending workshops, Rain began to see the impact Youth Insearch leaders had on participants. Watching young people use their lived experience to support others inspired her to follow the same path.

"I understood I first had to work on my own mental health in order to help others."

With the support of the Youth Insearch community, Rain focused on healing, self-reflection and personal growth. Over time, her goal became clear: she wanted to become a Youth Insearch Leader.

Just as she was preparing to undertake Leader Training, she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder that threatened to derail her plans. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Rain remained determined. She adapted, worked around her health needs and stayed committed to the process. Her perseverance paid off.

Soon after, Rain became an accredited Youth Insearch Leader, attending her graduation ceremony at Admiralty House in Sydney and reflecting on how far she had come from the young person who had first arrived at workshop feeling isolated and unsure of her future.

Today, Rain is employed through Youth Insearch's Regional Reset program, supporting young people across regional communities and helping them navigate challenges similar to those she once faced herself.
While ongoing health challenges remain part of her life, they no longer define what she believes is possible.

Through her leadership, lived experience and commitment to others, Rain now helps create the same sense of safety, connection and hope that she found when she first arrived at Youth Insearch.
For Rain, Youth Insearch was the place where she found her voice, discovered her purpose and transformed her lived experience into a source of strength for others.
